American Tamarack Bonsai
This pair of tamaracks was up for bidding at the Minnesota Bonsai
Society Fall '08 public auction, which I won.  They are about 22
years old and were collected in the early 1990's in northern
Minnesota. The taller tree has nicely developed nebari, so it was
repotted separately in conifer soil in a shallow chinese pot and
allowed to grow undisturbed for two years.  Both trees are quite
bushy and will need some foliage trimming and styling.

In May of 2010 the bonsai society hosted Dennis Makishima at one of our
visiting specialist workshops.  The theme for the Makishima workshop was
'styling by trimming'.  So I eagerly brought my tamarack to the workshop, and
Dennis gave me some good ideas on how to style this tree.  I went to work
with my cutting tools and wire, and the pleasing end result is seen here.
Dennis said to the class this is a good example of 'less is more' in styling
design.  Now the tree looks like a grand old tamarack that has survived many
Minnesota winters.  As it continues to grow, the foliage tips will be further
refined, following Dennis's suggestions  The tree now is about 22 years old.

Tree was repotted April 2011 into a smaller,
oval chinese pot just as the leaf buds  started
to look like tiny, green shaving brushes.  At
the same time the branch pads were trimmed.
