Amur Maple Bonsai
This amur maple has been growing hidden
in my backyard for about 20 years in a
shady area protected from the weather.
When I found it both trunks were about 5
feet long and the foliage sparse, so I
began to train it into a chumono twin trunk
while still in the ground.  Each trunk was
reduced to about 1 to 2 feet in late fall, and
next spring many new shoots grew which
were shaped gradually  into the double
broom style seen here.  After 2 years of
training in the ground, it was dug out in
early spring and transplanted into a
deciduous bonsai soil in the cedar box.
This uncovered some interesting nebari.
The plan now is to gradually train the roots
to acclimate into a shallow bonsai
container.  Next spring it will be
transplanted into a cedar box about half
the height, and later into a container about
2 inches high.  The est'd age is about 24
years old.
